There's a problem in your text: "not their biologic sex." What does that mean? Penis=Male and NoPenis=Female? XX=female and XY=male? For me the misunderstanding about what you're talking about, when you use the term "biological" ist the main problem in misunderstanding transsexual people. You are what you are - if you know who you are then you know your "biological" sex. Gender Identity isn't a misorder - it is the knowledge about your birth-sex.

All too often, sexuality is confused with gender identity, yet sexuality is recognised and protected to a greater degree. Not only do we have to very often hide away from an intolerant society, there are high incidences of attacks on us, both physical and verbal. There are also too many suicides brought about because of the same intolerance. I wholeheartedly back this attempt to amend the wording and hope that we are eventually respectfully recognised.

I support the petition. We are human beings and any discernible traits in us cannot be used as a substitute for that fact (even if I was to be viewed solely as a transgendered person, I wonder why anyone would oppress me for that fact; am I hurting anyone). My brothers, father, grandpa all enjoy human rights because they are human beings not because they are male and behave in a masculine manner. I also demand people to treat me so. Respect my rights as a human being (I am a human being and I have evidence to support that claim). Unless those who abrogate my rights have reasons to prove otherwise, I will claim my human rights. People can concot all sorts of reasons to deny transgendered people their human rights. But, its the sad reminder of the Hitlers of this world. Hitler hated the Jewish race, He wanted an excuse to justify his diabolical acts on fellow human beings. He referred to the jewish population as jews and went ahead to annihilate them 'because' he was doing God's work. The jewish population had crucified jesus (and all that religious mumbo jumbo) and Hitler cheated himself (and the masses) that he was on a god ordained task. The same scenario we have in our society. Religous extremists, social conservatives and other unhinged characters will go ahead to oppress me and my ilk cause of my gender variant behaviour (and not because I inconvenience or hurt them in anyway). Why? I am an affront to their Gods or whatever it is that they worship or because of their narrow reality tunnels cannot allow them to be perceptive of some fundamental issues in a person's life. They cannot differentiate between sex and gender, the ramifications of their sloppy thinking and fanaticism. Kenya suffered from 1998 U.S embassy bombing by al-qaeda and people here really whined alot. Yet, it is the same bettleheads who have no qualms killing, beating and denying transgendered people their human rights. They have the bible to support them. How is this different from a muslim terrorist using his/her Koran to justify jihads? They are all one and the same thing: senseless, uncompassionate, selfish, retrogressive and foolish. All people need to reconsider their attitudes on people who are different or who don't pass their individual definition of what is male and female. Let us all people be sensible and civil.

I fully support this petition as to its intent. However I wonder if the inclusion of gender will accomplish what is intended. There are those who will argue for the existance of only two genders. Perhaps the "gender" should be "Gender expression".

The human species need to join the rest of the universe in understanding that the norm is diversity.

So much damage is done to gender-variant people of all ages and identities because of ignorance and misconceptions. This petition is a wonderful step, one of many that needs to be done on the way to educating people on this problem.

I support this petition, both as a person whose gender identity is 'variant' from the confines of female and male and as a individual very glad to have the choice to seek physical transition.

I have read all the comments here and I wholeheartedly support this cause
What I have not noticed anyone say and is a fundamental fact is that we are ALL a creation of the Creator(Nature, whatever u wish to call IT) and so if any man discriminates against any of His Creation he discriminates against the Creator.
This is not philosophy but a fact no matter how u want to look at it.
Those of us that do discriminate are most probably still in the infancy of our human developement.
As we are all not at the same stage of evolvement on this human journey, sadly, discrimination is here to stay and has to be fought with every tool at the disposable of those who see and strongly believe differently. Good Luck.

Referring to earlier comments as well...

So what if this won't change everything? The point is that people are banding together to take a stand against the mistreatment of certain individuals. That is a very important thing to do. Besides, every social movement had to start somewhere. Getting the UN to change things seems like a huge goal, and it will be a huge sadness if we fail, but we still have to have the hope that something can come of this. Even if the UN doesn't change the wording, at least we all know that there ARE people around the world that are willing to band together with others to fight for their equal rights and representation. So what if we possbily can't change things at the WORLD level all at once. We can find the people that hold true to the same beliefs we do and we can band together and fight on a NATIONAL level for those equalities. It is difficult, yes, but only because people are becoming so apathetic. "People should not be afraid of their governments. The government should be afraid of their people." The problem is that people of today are getting LAZY and they just don't stand together like people used to. It's time to stand up and take back what is ours. It is time to stand up and fight against those injustices. Stop being negative and stop bringing others down by saying things will never change. What we all need now is a positive attitude with a positive outlook.

Dear Friends

I know from the experience of campaigning for more than 14 years on behalf of trans people in the UK that the first step towards any goal can feel like a bid for the impossible. When Press for Change started the task seemed insurmountable and I certainly wondered whether there would ever be a point where we could look back and say, "Yes! We got there".

Well, we did .. and every day in the UK I see little bits of evidence that the revolution continues, as our people gather strength and confidence from acquiring some self esteem and a feeling that the fight is a valid one.

What you are setting out to do with this project is no less daunting, and may seem like an empty wish for many who've given up hope of feeling accepted and valued. But nearly 700 signatures from around the planet in just a couple of days says that the world is already a different place -- because trans people themselves are already different.

All my best wishes to you therefore. I'll be watching how the campaign progresses and I'll look for opportunities to support it where I can.

And remember the end of that song "High Hopes" ... whoops there goes another rubber tree plant.
